Adam Droge's Homecoming Talk - 14 Mar 10 - Full Length and then some

I’m grateful for this opportunity I now have to speak to you today. It is good to be back with you in the Bountiful 9th ward. Before I begin, I’d like to turn your attention to a scripture in the New Testament, John 14:26-27, which states:

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

I think we sometimes underestimate the power of the Holy Ghost. He is not just a small spirit, he is the third member of the Godhead and he can be with us at all times. I hope all of you will listen to Holy Ghost as I speak to you and let him be the teacher today.

I’d like to start by sharing a story from the Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi chapters 3 and 4. Giddianhi, the leader of the band of Gadianton Robbers, sends a very threatening letter to Lachoneus, the chief judge of the Nephites at the time, telling him that his band of robbers is going to come down to their land and attack them. He offers Lachoneus a deal. If Lachoneus and the Nephites would surrender and join the band of robbers, they could live, otherwise the robbers were going to come down upon the Nephites and kill every one of them. Giddianhi made sure to brag about the strength of the robbers, saying that there was no way that they could be defeated by the Nephites. Lachoneus’s actions are real heroic. Instead of fearing Giddianhi by submitting to his proposal, he chooses not to fear and prepares his people, both spiritually and temporally. He tells the Nephites to repent and have faith on the Lord or else the robbers will win. The Nephites respond positively, repented of their sins, and preparations of defense were made. Because of their trust in the Lord that he would deliver them, when the robbers come down upon the Nephites the Nephites defeated the robbers. The response of the Nephites after they win is one that has caught my attention and taught me a lesson. It is recorded in the last verse of Chapter 4:

“And their hearts were swollen with joy, unto the gushing out of many tears, because of the great goodness of God in delivering them out of the hands of their enemies; and they knew it was because of their repentance and their humility that they had been delivered from an everlasting destruction.”

Gratitude is the principle that sticks out here. How often are we as grateful as the people in this story? I fear that many times we aren’t as grateful as we should be. It’s a shame, because we have a lot to be grateful for, especially here in Utah. Imagine with me for a moment that the city of Bountiful only had 2 wards and because of that the persecution for being a member of the church was real high. Every day at work or at school you had to stand up for yourself and your values and many times you had to stand alone. Imagine that in order to go to church every week you had to take a 15 – 20 minute drive to downtown Salt Lake City and that in order to attend the temple you had to drive 2 – 3 hours down to Manti because that was the closest temple. Time and Money didn’t allow you to travel to the temple more than once a month. Would these situations not test your faith? Such situations are normal life to those who live in the Texas Lubbock Mission. Now we put ourselves back in Utah and realize that we have a lot to be grateful for, more than we even realize! Her in Utah we have a huge support system and receive very little persecution from family, friends, and neighbors because most of them are members already. We have a church that is pretty much in our backyard and a temple that is up the street.

Location aside now, I have found that it is also a great privilege just to be members of this church. This is a blessing that I did not fully comprehend until I arrived in first area, Midland, Texas. Midland was dry, flat, ugly, and in the middle of nowhere, but I loved that place to death. It was a city of 100,000 people, yet I was surprised to find out that it only had 3 wards and 1 Spanish branch. Now those of you who know me might laugh at the thing that I did, but it teaches a good lesson. I wanted to know what the percentage of that was. I figured that 3 wards and 1 branch would probably be somewhere around 1,000 members, give or take a few hundred. 1,000 members out of a population of 100,000 comes out to be 1 percent. That meant that 99 percent of the population of Midland was not members of the church. Wow! This blew my mind. Such percentages also held up throughout the whole mission. Wanting to know if Texas was just weird, I set to find out what the percentage was throughout the whole world. Last April it was announced that church membership was around 13.5 million people. The other day I jumped online and found the population of the world was almost 6.7 billion. 13.5 million out of 6.7 billion comes out to be .2 percent. No, Texas is not weird. In fact, Texas is actually slightly above the worldwide average. 99.8 percent of the people today do not belong to the Lord’s church. That is incredible. Now, we do know that when we are judged it won’t be based on where we parked our car every Sunday, rather it will be where our heart was; yet the Savior did say in several places, 3 Nephi 27:33 being one of them, that the path to eternal life is narrow and there will be few people that find it as opposed to the wide path that leads to death that many people will come across. Those of us who can say that the Lord has led us to the right path in life have much to be grateful for, and, like the Nephites of old, should be praising God to the gushing out of many tears.

Yet through all this, I have found that, although few people are following the true path, there are so many great people. Many people are out there just as it declares in D&C 123:12 that are hidden from the truth only because they know not where to find it. And regardless of whether or not they are wicked or righteous, every person born on this earth is a son or daughter of our heavenly father. It seems as if there is an issue here. That issue is the subject that I have been assigned to speak to you about. It is the subject of Adversity.

I am grateful that I was assigned this subject because it is the perfect subject for a returned missionary to speak about. Missionary work is a great privilege and I can testify that the power of the gospel is very strong and does indeed change people’s lives. This is why Satan spends extra effort fighting the missionary work. One might think that being a missionary would be real easy because of the great message we declare and the tools that we have, but it was in fact a very hard uphill battle that I have been fighting, one that would be so easy to just give up. Adversity is very strong in the lives of missionaries, investigators, and converts. I have experienced that first hand.

Now when I teach someone or when I am being taught, I delight in simplicity and plainness. I love the big picture to be painted, because I think it helps us become better people; so that is what I will attempt to do today as I address the subject of adversity. In order to understand adversity, I think it is important to understand the person who I feel comfortable in calling the author of adversity, Satan. In order to understand Satan, I have called on someone to help me – James E Talmage. Those of you who don’t know who he is, Talmage was an apostle of the Lord here in this last dispensation who lived and died several years ago. He left behind his words in several great books. The book of his I will use today is called Articles of Faith. On pages 62-63, Talmage gives a great description of Satan. It reads as follows:

“We have had occasion to refer frequently to the author of evil among men. This is Satan, the adversary or opponent of the Lord, the chief of evil spirits, called also the Devil, Beelzebub, or the Prince of Devils, Perdition, and Belial. The figurative appellations dragon and serpent are applied to Satan when reference is made to his fall. We learn from the revealed word that Satan was once an angel of light, then known as Lucifer, a Son of the Morning; but his selfish ambition led him to aspire to the glory and power of the Father, to secure which he made the pernicious proposition to redeem the human family by compulsion; and, failing in this purpose, he headed an open rebellion against the Father and the Son, drawing a third of the hosts of heaven into his impious league. These rebellious spirits were expelled from heaven, and have since followed the impulses of their wicked natures by seeking to lead human souls into their own condition of darkness. They are the devil and his angels. The right of free agency, maintained and vindicated by the war in heaven, prevents the possibility if compulsion being employed in this fiendish work of degradation; but the powers of these malignant spirits to tempt and persuade are used to the utmost. Satan tempted Eve to transgress the law of God; it was he who imparted the secret murder for gain to the fratricide, Cain. Satan experts a mastery over the spirits that have been corrupted by his practices; he is the foremost of the angels who were thrust down, and the instigator of the ruin of those who fall in this life; he seeks to molest and hinder mankind in good efforts, by tempting to sin; or it may be by imposing sickness, or possibly death.”

So all of us are children of our Heavenly Father and before we came down to earth we lived with our Heavenly Father as spirits. Satan was one of these spirits. He is referred to as an angel of light in the Pre-earth life. However, when Heavenly Father presented his plan for all of us, Satan allowed his pride to get the best of him and he rebelled against Heavenly Father, wanting all the glory for himself. All of us were given the agency to follow either Heavenly Father or to follow Satan. One-Third of the hosts of heaven chose to follow Satan. This caused Satan and his followers to be cast out. This turn of events is referred to by many as the war in heaven.

At a moments glance, it may seem as if the war in heaven ended when Satan and his followers were cast out, but if one looks deeper he or she will discover that the war has not ended, but rather continues here on earth, because not only is earth the place that we were all sent to, but is also the place where Satan and his followers were cast down to. Our purpose in coming down to earth is to prepare to return to live with our Heavenly Father and we need to improve our time while in this life. Our earth life is known as a time of probation and of testing to see if we will do all that is necessary to return back. Satan is definitely not ignorant of this plan. He is very well aware of what is happening and what our Father in Heaven’s purpose is. Without this knowledge, he wouldn’t be so good at fighting against it, which is exactly what he is doing. Satan will do everything in his power to stop us from returning. He knows our weaknesses and is very good at attacking them at just the right time. As we get closer to doing what is right, Satan will in turn attack us harder because he does not want us to make it.

There are many examples of this; the first of which I will mention comes from the life of Joseph Smith. At a young age, Joseph was concerned about the welfare of his soul. There were many different Christian religions around all claiming that they were the truth and these claims confused Joseph. All that he wanted to know is which one he should join. He spent a lot of time searching it out in his mind and finally came to the conclusion that he needed to ask God which one he should join. It was in the year 1820 in upstate New York that Joseph went into a grove of trees near his home and had a marvelous vision unfolded to him in which he claims that he saw God the Father and Jesus Christ and was informed to join none of the churches at the time. What I wish to point out in this story is what happened to Joseph right before he had this vision. He says that he was attacked and overcame by some actual being from the unseen world. I find the timing of Satan’s attack very interesting. His strongest attack did not come when Joseph was searching religions or even as he was studying the scriptures and decided he needed to ask God; it came right as he was praying to know the truth – directly before his heavenly vision.

As missionaries, we had the privilege of helping people make the critical decision to get baptized. This is one of the biggest steps that all of us need to take in order to return home and thus is a step that Satan does not want people to take and so he does all he can to make sure people don’t take it. I remember the first experience I had with an investigator who was close to getting baptized. His wife was a less active member and together they had four amazing young children. We first came in contact with her and she was rather cold with us. It didn’t seem that she was at all ready to come back to church, but then we met him and as we started to teach him, he really caught fire. He started to read the Book of Mormon and come to church and he loved it. He was really excited for the day that he was going to get baptized. By like I mentioned, not only does Satan not want us to do what is right, but he will attack us harder right before we are about to do what it right. Such was the case with this couple. The week before his baptism, this young man received some strong adversity from Satan and his countenance totally changed. We did all we could to try to help him, but he let Satan get the best of him and the baptism was cancelled. He didn’t get baptized while I was there and I believe that to this day he still hasn’t been baptized.

While this was a spiritual low of my mission and especially hard for a young missionary like myself, I learned from it. By the time I had gained experience on my mission, I had seen the adversity from Satan so much that I started to warn the people I taught of this adversity so that they could see it coming. Without fail, every investigator I taught received some sort of adversity right before their baptism. About a year after this first experience, there was another couple I taught in which the wife was a less active member and the husband was a nonmember. Their story is too long to relate here, but needless to say, after much work on both our part and there’s, the husband decided that he wanted to get baptized and so, like I had previously done with people, I warned them that they would receive adversity right before he got baptized. Like I had warned them, the adversity came. Fortunately, they were able to work through it and the baptism went through. However, adversity didn’t slow down with them, as Satan also likes to attack new members. A few weeks later, the wife told me that I had been exactly right with what I had said; it had been the hardest weeks of their lives. It was as if I had prophesied what would happen to them.

Some may wonder why this adversity is a necessary part of God’s plan, because it is quite obvious that it is. If we look at the account of Job’s life in the Old Testament, we will see that God clearly gave Satan permission to attack Job. In 2 Nephi 2:11, 15-16, the prophet Lehi, in talking to his son Jacob, teaches us why it is necessary. He states:

“For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things. If not so, my first-born in the wilderness, righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness, neither holiness nor misery, neither good nor bad. Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one; wherefore, if it should be one body it must needs remain as dead, having no life neither death, nor corruption nor incorruption, happiness nor misery, neither sense nor insensibility. And to bring about his eternal purposes in the end of man, after he had created our first parents, and the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and in fine, all things which are created, it must needs be that there was an opposition; even the forbidden fruit in opposition to the tree of life; the one being sweet and the other bitter. Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other.”

We need to have the choice in front of us. Our salvation is up to us. We need to choose good. We cannot choose good if there is no bad choice to reject. We need adversity. Without it, it is impossible to be righteous. Adversity will come to all of us. There is no getting out of it. How we deal with that adversity tells a lot about who we are. If we look back into religious history, the greatest men had the hardest lives. And if we look at the life of the greatest man to walk the earth, even Jesus Christ, we will find out that he had the hardest life of all. If Christ wasn’t exempt from adversity, what makes us think that we will be?

Yet with all this said, we know that there will come a time when this war that we are waging against Satan will end. Even though at times it may seem otherwise and that Satan is doing a very good job, God will win and Satan will lose. There is no question about it. The question lies in where each of us individually will stand. If we are not devoted followers of Christ doing everything that we can possibly do, then, as Alma tells us (in Alma 5:37-39), the devil is our shepherd. There will be no fence-sitters allowed in the Celestial Kingdom. The comforting thing to know is that we have power over Satan. Satan only has as much power over us as we choose to give him. As Paul says (in 1 Corinthians 10:13), we will not be tempted above that which we can bear. And rest assured that God has not left us alone in this fight. He has provided us with some tools to help us along the way. Alma gives us a good clue as to what these tools are. In Alma 37: 6-7, he states:

“Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise. And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great and eternal purposes; and by very small means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls.”

The way that we can fight Satan is indeed by very small and simple things. There is an age old spiritual formula that I have come across and as I’ve discovered this formula, I have found it almost comical. The tools that we have been given are the classic primary / Sunday school / seminary answers that we have given our whole life. Three tools: read the scriptures, pray, and go to church. I have been amazed at how well these things work if we use them together.

First off, we should read the scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon. God hasn’t left us alone in our journey here through our earth life to fight Satan. Throughout time, God has always called prophets. Prophets communicate with God. God tells them what the people need to know and they in turn tell the people what God wants them to know. The words of these prophets are frequently written down and become known as scriptures. It is truly a great blessing to have the words of God for us to study and apply in our lives and we should take advantage of this great gift to us by studying the scriptures daily, because, as Nephi tells us (in 2 Nephi 32:3), the scriptures will tell us all things that we should do. They will guide us in our lives. And, as I have noticed, this same process of scriptures being written for us continues today. Here in our day we have a prophet, his two counselors, and the quorum of the twelve apostles, along with various other church leaders that get together every six months in the form of general conference. They are inspired by God as to what they need to tell us and, after much preparation, they give us that specific counsel for us to apply to our lives, which counsel comes directly from God. These words of counsel are written down and given to us in the ensign. What a blessing it is to receive new scripture every six months.

As I have also been in what is known to be the Bible belt, I have come across a common tactic that Satan uses to deceive people. He will let them believe in God. He will let them believe in the atonement of Christ. He will let them believe that God has called prophets and thus given us scripture. But the thing that he uses in all that to deceive the people is that he makes them limit God to only one book of scripture, the Bible. If anyone comes with any other new book of scripture or claims that another prophet has been called, the people will close their minds and cast them out without even listening, as if they had spoken blasphemy. It was very sad to see this mindset among people, because who are we to limit God? God has always commanded all of his people to write the words which he gives them and then to study those words. He definitely will not curse us for studying an additional book of scripture that he caused to be written. I testify that he has caused more to be written and one book that we should especially study is the Book of Mormon.

In the introduction of the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith makes a bold statement. He says, “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”

Many investigators would read that, get a shocked look on their face as they read, and then ask us, “Did Joseph Smith ever read the Bible?” Yes, he did. In several languages actually, and he said that the Book of Mormon was the most correct book. The whole chapter of 1 Nephi 13 explains this beautifully and I would suggest all of you to go home and study it. In essence, it tells us that at the time of the apostles, the Bible was a pure book, but during the dark ages there were many plain and precious things that were taken out of the Bible. God being all knowing, he caused the Book of Mormon to be written at the same time as the Bible on the American continent and preserved it to come forth in these last days to bring back the plain and precious things that were lost in the Bible.

With this in mind, it is clear as to why the Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion. If the Book of Mormon is a true book of scripture, then that means that Joseph Smith was a true prophet, and everything that Joseph Smith taught was from God. All concerns can be resolved by finding out if this book is true.

The second tool that has been given to us is the gift of prayer. In our battle against Satan, God has instructed us how we can talk directly to him. That is through prayer. If we pray to God, he will help us through our challenges. He will inform us of the direction we need to take our lives. If there is anything that we need or want that is righteous, he will give it to us. The Bible Dictionary, on pages 752 to 753, gives some great instruction on prayer that has meant a lot to me as I have studied prayer:

“As soon as we learn the true relationship in which we stand toward God (namely, God is our Father, and we are his children), then at once prayer becomes natural and instinctive on our part. Many of the so-called difficulties about prayer arise from forgetting this relationship. Prayer is the act by which the will of the father and the will of the child are brought into correspondence with each other. The object of prayer is not to change the will of God, but to secure for ourselves and for others blessings that God is already willing to grant, but that are made conditional on our asking for them. Blessings require some work or effort on our part before we can obtain them. Prayer is a form of work, and is an appointed means for obtaining the highest of all blessings.”

With this idea in mind, prayer has a whole new meaning to it. The relationship that we can have with God through prayer is the same type of relationship that a father can have for a child, because God is our father. He’s our heavenly father. A father wants to hear from his children. He wants to help them in times of need. Most of the times, a father already knows what his children want and is more than willing to help them, but usually can’t do anything if the child refuses to ask for help. It is also worth mentioning that the relationship between father and child would be quite damper if the only time the child ever talked to the father was when he or she was in trouble.

Many, if not all of us, know at least one person who is struggling with their testimony or does not have a faith in Jesus Christ. We hope that they have an experience like Alma the younger did when an angel appeared to him and convinced him that he was in the wrong and needed change and he immediately became a totally different person, a devoted follower of Christ. As I recently studied this miraculous story, there was a part of it that stood out to me and changed my whole look at the story. That part comes in Mosiah 27:14, where the angel is speaking to Alma and telling him why he came. It reads:

“And again, the angel said: Behold, the Lord hath heard the prayers of his people, and also the prayers of his servant, Alma, who is they father; for he has prayed with much faith concerning thee that thou mightest be brought to the knowledge of the truth; therefore, for this purpose I have come to convince thee of the power and authority of God, that the prayers of his servants might be answered according to their faith.”

This speaks to me that Alma the younger was not visited with an angel because of anything that he did. He was trying to destroy the church and wasn’t planning on stopping. The angel came because of the prayers and faith of the people, especially his own father. With that in mind, it puts a lot more on those who have faith to pray for and help others who are struggling.

The final tool in which I will talk to you about today is that of coming to church. In order to help us in our journey, God has once again called a prophet for us in our day, and established his church on the earth. But not only has he called a prophet, he has also called twelve apostles, seventies, stake presidents, bishops, and many other church leaders to help us all. That church is spreading miraculously and is found on every part of earth. This system is set up that we have the great opportunity of attending this church every single week. Everywhere we go, the church is set up the exact same way. Not only can we go once a week, but the leaders of the church are there for us to help us and guide whenever we need it. Church isn’t a sanctuary for the saints; it is a hospital for sinners. While the church organization itself is absolutely perfect, there isn’t a single member of the church that is. The only perfect person in the entire history of the earth died about 2,000 years ago. With this in mind, Moroni explains beautifully in the entire chapter of Moroni 6 what the purpose of church is. He mentions that it is a place where we can to be nourished by the good word of God. We go to fast and to pray. We go to speak to one another about the salvation of our souls. We also go to partake of the sacrament, which essentially is like being baptized every single week because it is the means by which we renew those covenants that we made at baptism. Never think that you are not worthy enough to go to church, because if you are not worthy, than church is exactly where you need to be.

To conclude, I would like to go back to Alma chapter 37, and this time read verse 46:

“O my son, do not let us be slothful because of the easiness of the way because of the easiness of the way; for so was it with our fathers; for so was it prepared for them, that if they would look they might live; even so it is with us. The way is prepared, and if we will look we may live forever.”

Alma’s encouragement to his son is the same encouragement that I give to all of you today. I have described to you how the way to eternal life and the way to victory over Satan is easy. Let us not be slothful because it is so easy. Alma in this verse refers to the story of Moses and the children of Israel where there were fiery serpents sent to plague the children of Israel. To remedy this, Moses was instructed by the Lord to make a brass serpent and put it on a pole. Everyone who simply looked at this brass serpent was miraculously healed. But yet there were some who chose not to look and in consequence choose to die because they didn’t think it would work. It was just simply too easy. So it is with us. The way is easy. If we look to Christ and follow him we are healed. But many of us choose not to follow Christ because it is too easy. Let us not be one of those people. Let us look and live.

It is my testimony to all of you that God is my heavenly father. Jesus Christ is his son. Christ came to the other to suffer the penalty for my sins so that I could return home. God the Father and Jesus Christ did both appear to the young man Joseph Smith and called him to be a prophet to establish Christ’s church back to the earth so that I could have the fullness of the gospel in my life. The Book of Mormon was provided as a comfort for me and as an evidence for me that I can know that this is all true. How grateful I am for this in my life. I know that all of this is equally true for all of you in your own individual lives. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Letter 2-18-10

Dear Family,

Well, the time has once again come to email on P-day. I honestly feel like I will be here again on next P-day, but I will not and it seems unreal. Not that I’m in denial, but it just doesn’t seem real. I’ve just got so used to this missionary life that it has become a part of me, but everything happens for a reason and I am just getting called to labor in a different part of the Lord’s vineyard with a different assignment. That’s all.

Following up real quick on last week’s email, two points of concern. First, I would like to point out Murphy’s Law. When you are really looking for something or you really want something, you are never going to get it or find it. The only time you will find what you’re looking for or get what you want is when you don’t need it. Like in Settlers, the only time a 7 is rolled is when you have too many cards in your hand AND you are really hoping it doesn’t get rolled. Why do I bring this up? Well, if you remember, last week I talked about photo CD’s and how I’ve been trying constantly for the last 3 or 4 months to get one made and finally I gave up and apologized to everyone through email that I never got one sent like I wanted to. Well, right after a sent that, we went to Wal-Mart and guess what? It worked. Like it was waiting for me to give up before it would let me make one. So I made two and sent them on Tuesday. They should be here today, yesterday, or tomorrow and everyone will have some pictures to look at for the first few days before I get home. The only photo CD I have left to make is the one for this last transfer with Elder Wakefield and Elder Thode and I will wait till I get home to create it because I am not done taking pictures.

Second follow up is with Sara Fink. I gave a big long story about her last week and have a story to finish. Well, I hadn’t told her that I was leaving and that the 21st is my last Sunday, but we were going to try to push her a little to get baptized on the 21st because she is ready and I would have it in the back of my mind that it would be a great finale to my mission, but that that wouldn’t be the focus. Well, turns out that I didn’t even have to bring that up. Before I even thought of telling her I was leaving, she already knew and had a goal in her mind to get baptized before I left. Wow. First she already knew about the temple without us telling her and now this? She is a very bright young lady. I love it when our job is made easy. On Saturday we went over to teach the commandments. In Preach My Gospel there are 12 commandments that we have to teach. We decided to start with the biggest four, the four that they specifically ask about in the baptismal interview: The Word of Wisdom, the Law of Chastity, The Law of Tithing, and the Sabbath Day. Nope. Didn’t teach her anything she didn’t already know. She was already familiarized with those and had committed herself to living them. Why was I not surprised? Now about the baptism this Sunday, it ain’t happen’. She wanted to get baptized on that day, and we wanted to see her baptized on that day, but her parents will be out of town and both Sara and I agreed that her parents coming to her baptism is better than Elder Droge coming to her baptism. I’m not at all hurt, though. I know she is getting baptized and Sara knows she is getting baptized, it’s just a matter of time and hopefully sooner rather than later, but either way, everything will work out. In my mind she still goes in the records of Elder Droge’s mission as baptism number 14. That’s the official count. 8 of those 14 were right here in Roswell, so I’m not complaining. It’s been a good 7 month tenure here in the UFO capital of the United States. Good city (if you stay away from certain areas at certain times, that is). Good ward. Good People. I will miss Roswell.

I forgot to wish everyone a great Valentine’s Day last week, but I will now wish everyone a belated Valentine’s Day. It was a good day for me; I hope it was for you. The church meeting was very good here. The subject was on love and the concluding speaker got up and gave a fantastic talk about Celestial Marriage. It was as if we were listening to a general authority speak. He was a very talented public speaker and knew a lot about the gospel. I enjoyed it. It was also my last church meeting at the Roswell 1st ward, being that this next Sunday is Stake Conference. I thought that was planned very well. I had done a great job of not advertising my departure and it was planned quite nicely that I would slip under the radar, because even those who knew I was going home this month weren’t going to realize that this was my last Sunday. I was going to be able to sneak home. Well, ten minutes before church started, President Wiser, the Stake President, walked in. He visited with Bishop Malcom in the back of the chapel. Well, I was nearby and noticed that they were talking and saw Bishop Malcom chuckle a little. I thought nothing of it, but I hadn’t thought of the fact that the Zone Leaders live with the Wisers and probably informed President Wiser that this was my last Sunday in Roswell 1st ward. Well, Bishop Malcom then walks over to me asks me if I could give a farewell testimony, since this is my last Sunday in the ward. Dang it! Plan foiled. President Wiser had probably just told Bishop Malcom that I was leaving. Now the whole ward knows I am leaving. Oh well, it’s all good. Even though I’m not one who needs recognition, I guess it’s nice to know that the ward cares and was pleased with the service I performed for their ward and will be missing me when I’m gone.

Now it is time to close for the final time. What a privilege it has been to serve a mission. I am truly honored. I can look back on mission as I am finishing and declare with Paul that I have fought a good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith. I don’t know if I am ready to be offered up yet, but yet I am ready as I ever will be. Looking back, I have seen a change come over me. I am a different person that has learned a whole lot about a whole lot of different things. And as is apparent in everyone’s letters, not only have I changed, but the outside world has changed a lot, too. I am a different person going back to a different world. My whole future is up in the air right now. I don’t know what’s going to happen and that makes me a little nervous, but yet I read my patriarchal blessing and find comfort in reading that when all is said and done, everything will work out. I remember a scene in Star Wars episode II, a guy walks up to Obi-One and asks if he wants to buy some death sticks. Obi-One replies that, ‘you don’t want to sell me death sticks.’ The guy answers, ‘I don’t want to sell you death sticks.’ Obi-One replies again, ‘you want to go home and re-think your life.’ As the guy walks away, he says, ‘I want to go home and re-think my life.’ That has been the inside joke these last couple of weeks between me and my companions because it’s time for me to go home and re-think my life, because it will definitely be different than what I originally planned. We’ll see what happens. Remember, Salt Lake City Airport, 2:15 PM MST this upcoming Wednesday. They sent me the final flight itinerary a week or so ago and mentioned that they sent a copy of this one home as well, so I don’t think you’ll forget, but we will see you then. Peace out and TLM for life!

Letter 2-11-10

Dear Family,

So, I have one item of business and then one missionary story. The item of businesss is that for the last 3 or 4 months, I have tried my hardest to get a photo CD sent home, but the CD creater things at WalMart have been possesed. Everytime I try them they decide to not work. They will print photos, but for some reason or another, they won't make CDs. The plan has been in my mind to create 3 CDs. I had 2 to create, Roswell Part 2 and Roswell Part 3, out here and then Roswell Part 4 for after I get home since that is the one from my last transfer, but by the looks of things, I may just have to do all 3 when I get home, so sorry for the technical difficulties. If time permits today, I may try one last time to create the other 2 CDs, but we'll see.

The missionary story comes with Sara Fink. She is my last hope to get one more baptism before I leave. Reviewing her story, she is the girlfriend of Travis Lueveno, an active priest in Roswell 2nd Ward and son of Bishop Lueveno of 2nd Ward (2nd ward is the other ward. I go to 1st ward). Both Travis and Sara are 17 year old high school seniors. Back on October 11th, all 5 stakes in the mission sponsered an idea given by President Robison. Invitation Sunday. A special sunday set aside for the members to invite their friends to church. All 3 hours were to be dedicated to the message of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to show to the outside world who it is that we worship and follow and to also help them feel the spirit of this church, the restored church of Jesus Christ. Well, Travis Lueveno decided that he would invite his girlfriend, Sara Fink, to come to church. He did and she accepted. Without Travis even making the slightest hint to us 1st ward elders, we knocked on the Fink home the day before Invitation Sunday while we were out finding (tracting). We hadn't the slightest idea of who they were, but the mom answered. Mom wanted nothing to do with us, but quickly turned us over to Sara because of the fact that Sara's boyfriend was a member and Sara was going to church anyway. Sara easily accepted our offer for us to teach her about the restoration and told us the story of Travis inviting her to church. I think that was meant to happen. God doesn't work in coincidences. Everything happens for a reason. The 1st lesson went good and she enjoyed church. From then through December, things went slow and Sara was hard to catch. We saw her about once or twice a month because she had a lot of things on her plate at the time. When January rolled around, we caught her again and invited her to church and set up a lesson at the Lueveno home. She came to church, with Travis still, and we taught a great 3rd lesson, the gospel of Jesus Christ. I think everything was downhill from there. She has now been to church almost every single week since, 3 or 4 times in a row now, still at 2nd ward. 2 weeks ago, she asked us where she is in the process and told us that she really wanted to get baptized. All the other churches she went to have all fizzled out, but this one hasn't for her and everything makes sense. We have been wanting her to come over to first ward beacuse in the long run its a better option because there are very few young women in the other ward and none her age, so all the support she has is from Travis and if they were to break up, things wouldn't be good with no support, but here in 1st ward, there are several young women her age that would be a big help. Plus, if she comes to 1st ward, it will prove to many people that she's in it for herself and not just for her boyfriend. She has realized that and has wanted to come to 1st ward, but is slightly nervous about going to a new ward. Well, the young women in first ward this past week or so have done an amazing job with fellowship and have made her feel comfortable. She has come to 1st ward mutual and would've come to church this past week, but the day before she had to take a trip to the hospital, her equilibrium was off. She is fine now, but took some advise from her dad to get some rest. So everything is going very well. Another plus is that she has been attending early morning seminary with the youth and has mentioned to us that she wants to get married in the temple as well. Funny thing with that is that we haven't talked to her at all about the temple, so our job is being made easier with all the teaching going on behind the scenes. The only obstacle right now is that in order to get baptized, since she is only 17 is that she has to get permission from her Dad (her Mom left since we started teaching). He isn't really religious and doesn't mind her going to church, but she doesn't know what he will think about her joining and so she is nervous about that. Not about the baptism part, she doesn't think he will have a problem with that, but the temple issue. He won't be able to go inside the temple to see his daughter get married. Our advise was to take it one step at a time here and she did get some advise from 2nd ward bishop, Bishop Lueveno, so hopefully everything will work out. We are going to push for her to get baptized on February 21st, the Sunday before I go home. It will be a little bit of a push, but I think she is ready and I want to see her get baptized before I leave. That will be cool. A great way to end a grand and glorious two years. If it doesn't happen, I won't be too hurt because she is definitely converted to the gospel and will get baptized eventually, so I'm not worried.

Anyways, I will sign off now. I will update you on Sara next week. That was a long story as I look back on it, but I hope you enjoyed it since I only have one last email session left and it was probably the last big missionary story I will have on my mission. I will let you know how things turn out. And lets do this email thing one last time. Until next week!

Letter 2-3-10

Dear Family,

Surprise, surprise! Interviews with President Robison are tomorrow, so p-day is today. Yet another month has gone away. January of 2010 ended in an interesting way, so let’s get down to business.

I believe I left everyone hanging with the story of Joe Sanchez. Last week we ran into a sticky situation with the baptism that was unresolved when I emailed last week, but the story is now completed. All that was heard from Joe about his wife was negative things, so when Joe called Thursday morning saying that his wife had some issues with him getting baptized I was kinda nervous because if you don’t have permission from the spouse, they can’t get baptized. Not having a clue of what we were getting ourselves into, we ventured to the Sanchez home a couple hours after emailing to visit with Joe and Velina Sanchez. Turns out Velina wasn’t such a bad lady after all; in fact, she was actually a great lady who knows her husband a little more than we do. We learned that Joe isn’t a very good communicator. All that Velina knew was that missionaries were visiting with Joe and that he was coming to church. Well, suddenly Joe tells her that he has to get baptized and has to pay his tithing, keep in mind that she heard this a few days before he said he was getting baptized. Red flag flies up in her mind. She remembers that Joe has gone to several churches before and been baptized 3 or 4 times in the past, yet has never been able to be fully committed to a church and when he says he has to pay his tithing another red flag goes up because his finances aren’t in the right position for him to pay tithing. Turns out we find that Joe is horrible with money and is in a lot of debt. So what does Velina do? She wants to talk with the missionaries about it because, even though she’s not a huge fan of the church, she is a very good Christian lady that has a lot of truth in her. She is under the impression that if you’re going to join a church, you have to be fully committed. Either go 100% or not at all and she didn’t know if Joe should be baptized because she doesn’t feel he can keep all the commitments, especially tithing. Wow. I am so glad that she talked with us. One, we told her that this isn’t our decision like Joe made it sound. This is Joe’s. Joe does feel very good about this church. He says he feels better about this church that he has about any other church and that was evident because he has come to church every week and started living the Word of Wisdom and continued to visit with us and stay strong even though he received lots of opposition. Now as far as finances go, that was way over my head. First off, I’m not a marriage counselor, which is the position I was put in for that hour while they both bickered back and forth. Second, I’m only a 21 year old kid. I’ve never really had to deal with finances enough to resolve that concern. So what did we do? Reinforcements. We took Bishop Malcom over on Friday and shabang! Right decision. I learned a whole ton. Bishop sat down with Joe and Velina and talked with them both for an hour while we sat and watched. Bishop pretty much sided with Velina and made Joe make some commitments as far as his finances go and also some commitments to communicate with his wife and then passed for baptism. Even though Velina didn’t attend the baptism and isn’t real interested in the church, she felt comfortable with Joe getting baptized and I believe that she will soon follow if Joe stays true to the commitments he has made. Joe was baptized on Sunday, January 31st, as planned and it went real good. I was happy. He will get confirmed this upcoming Sunday in Sacrament Meeting.

As far as our other investigators go, I want to get at least one more baptism before I leave and it looks like we will make that. The person will be Sara Fink, the 17 year old high school senior who is the girlfriend of 2nd ward bishop’s son. She told us this week she wants to get baptized, but I don’t have time to tell that story, so I will tell it next week. Jake Gonzales is doing great but has been out of town for the last two weeks on a work assignment, so getting baptized this month is questionable. We set another baptismal date with Peter Hardin, the nine year old who’s family is less active, for this month, but they still aren’t committed to church, so that is questionable as well. Chuck and Sharon Nelson are doing good, but we are working slower. So that is it for this week. Everyone have a great week.

Letter 1-28-10

Dear Family,

“I ask that my testimony of the Book of Mormon and all that it implies, given today under my oath and office, be recorded by men on earth and angels in heaven. I hope I have a few years left in my ‘last days,’ but whether I do or do not, I want it absolutely clear when I stand before the judgment bar of God that I declared to the world, in the most straightforward language I could summon, that the Book of Mormon is true, that it came forth and was given to bring happiness and hope to the faithful in the travail of the latter days.”
--Elder Jeffrey R Holland (Safety for the Soul, Oct Conf 2009)

What a great day to be a missionary. My birthday last week was good. Several people called and wished me a happy birthday, I got a birthday dinner from two different people (not on the same day, but both between last Thursday and now), and received Greg and Wendy’s birthday package in addition to another bag full of birthday goodies from one of the people who also provided a dinner. So I was well taken care of, no worries.

Time is running out, but yet there is still plenty of time to get things done. Although Elder Holland’s talk last conference was surprisingly intimidating (I had to double check in my mind to make sure I believed the Book of Mormon because he made me feel bad that I didn’t believe in it stronger), I share the same desire. I want to make it absolutely clear to these people that I testified to them that the Book of Mormon is true.

Some drama, good and bad, has happened this week. It turns out that Joe Sanchez could’ve been baptized this past Sunday. We postponed it because he was going out of town, and he did, but he returned earlier than he expected and showed up for church on Sunday. By then it was too late to do it that day, so this week will be just one more week of commitment, as Bishop Malcom said. Joe is really excited about Sunday, but writing on Thursday this week is a bit of a disappointment on your side, because I will have to leave you hanging. His wife, who has never had a problem with us teaching him, has suddenly turned against it. We have never taught her, tried to a few times, because she is closed minded to the church and doesn’t really want to talk to us. Yet she let Joe get involved and make his own decisions. Now she has said that if Joe pays his tithing, she will kick him out of the house, and she may be against him getting baptized. A baptismal candidate can’t get baptized without the permission of his or her spouse. All this news transpired today when Joe called us a few hours ago. She wants to have a chat with us personally later today. Put this story on pause now, because I don’t know how this will transpire. We will find out in a few hours and you all will find out if Joe got baptized… in one week from today. To be continued… just pray that everything will work out. It doesn’t bother me. Every baptismal candidate gets attacked by Satan the week of their baptism and 9 out of 10 times, the investigator pulls through and gets baptized anyway. I’ve only had one story where the investigator completely choked the week of their baptism and still isn’t baptized. Everyone else has done good. So I’m not too worried. Joe’s baptismal service has already been planned out and preparations being made, so it better not fall through, but whatever happens, the Lord is in it.

On a brighter note, if you remember back to last week, I mentioned that 3 out 4 people that were going to come to church didn’t show. Well, 2 of those 3 that didn’t show 2 weeks ago came to church this past Sunday. Jake Gonzales and Sara Fink were both at Church on Sunday in addition to Joe Sanchez. We haven’t had the opportunity to teach either, but Jake went and played basketball with the Elders Quorum on Tuesday and we have a set appointment with Sara tonight after P-day ends. We also plan on dropping by Jake afterwards so all is looking good. We finally were able to sit down with Chuck and Sharon Nelson this past week and taught a great Plan of Salvation lesson. Sharon has Agoraphobia, a fear of people, but yet she expressed that she really wanted to come to church, yet she isn’t quite ready because she describes her fear and random panic attacks to being in the same room as a tiger. That’s not a pleasant thought so I can understand that being in a closed up church with 200-300 people would be a little much. We plan on taking them on a tour of the church to help her feel more comfortable (we would do that on a weekday when the church is vacant) and we hope that that will help. Chuck would come, but his Sundays are pretty much controlled by his wife. It was funny when we were teaching the lesson because Chuck was pretty much teaching with us. He has so much truth in him that he said that he believes in the pre-earth life, the spirit world, and the 3 degrees of glory and even knows where it talks about them in the bible. Wow! We’re the only church that teaches those doctrines and he already believes in them. He’s what you call a dry mormon.

So that is the updates. We have not been able to catch the Hardins, but are still trying. Now I have to go because we have a big day in front of us. Take it easy everyone and have a great week, and a wonderful Groundhog day on Tuesday!

Letter 1-21-10

Dear Family,

This past week has definitely been an interesting week. I think that I have gone into denial. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not. Yesterday was Zone Conference. It was really good. President talked about having faith in Christ and how that having that faith in Christ is the best and most important thing that we can walk away with on our missions. The weird time at Zone Conference though was at testimony meeting. They always have the departing missionaries get up and bare their testimonies and for some odd reason they decided to call on me. How dare them. After Zone Conference, we had a baptismal interview set up for Joe Sanchez, but we had to wait around for a while because Zone Conference ended early and I was sitting there pondering and it didn’t seem real that I have run out of Zone Conferences. It honestly feels like that I’ll be to the next Zone Conference at the beginning of March. It’s a weird feeling. I had heard that the mission goes by fast, but I don’t think it’s possible to fully comprehend how fast it really does go by until you are living in your last transfer.

To make things even better, along with all the birthday letters that I have gotten, the Church decided to send me what they thought was a good birthday letter, but was actually the scariest letter of my mission. It informed me that Gregory Coy, Derrick Craven, and Adam Droge will be flying home on Febraury 24th. We take off from Lubbock at 8:55 AM and arrive in Dallas at 10:00 AM. We then wait around awhile and take off from Dallas at 12:25 PM and arrive in Salt Lake City at 2:15 PM. It didn’t give time zones, but it did say that the first flight was 1 hour 5 minutes and that the second flight was 2 hours 50 minutes. We talked it over and the math only works out right when the Time Zones correlate as to where the airport is. So we will leave Lubbock at 8:55 AM Texas time and arrive in Salt Lake City 2:15 PM Utah time. I kind of hid that away. I don’t feel like dwelling on it at all until it is necessary to, but I figured that those who want to be there at the airport to escort me home might want to know because if I didn’t, it would be an awful long walk from the Salt Lake airport to Bountiful. Plus, now those who want to be there can have plenty of time to put it into their calendars ahead of time. If any changes are made or any new information comes up, I’ll let you know.

Onto better things though, how about a golden birthday? I didn’t even realize until a few weeks ago when my companion noticed it that this birthday is the only time of my life that I will turn 21 on the 21st. That’s kinda fun. It is also convenient timing that my birthday is on a P-day. That will make for a fun day. No need to worry about presents. I’ll pull a Mom and say that I don’t really need anything for my birthday. I’m not greedy. Just another day in the life of a missionary.

Speaking of missionary work, we had, like I mentioned, Joe Sanchez’s baptismal interview. He passed, so that is good. He didn’t think he had enough money to pay tithing, however, so the district leader made us promise that we’d have him talk to the bishop about his finances. We also gave him a good talk. We told him that he needs to pay his tithing first, no matter what. If he does, everything else will fall into place and somehow things will always work out. We extended him the promise that the Lord gives in Malachi to prove God. Test him. See if he will not pour you out a blessing that you will not have room to receive it. He took that well. However, he forgot that he will be out of town this weekend, so we rescheduled for next weekend, the 31st of January. We did experience minor disappointments with the other investigators I mentioned. I told about six people. Four of them were committed to coming to church, but Joe was the only one that showed. Chuck and Sharon didn’t commit, mostly because Sharon is scared of coming to church because she is closed in with a lot of people, but Jake, Sara, and Peter were all going to come but for one reason or another did not. I guess that just means we work harder because we’re getting down to crunch time and we really need to get things going. Now is the time. Anyways, though, I better get going. Everyone have a nice week!

Oh, did I mention that I have officially dodged all leadership calls outside being senior companion? Elder Droge never trained, never was a DL, ZL, or AP. Just a regular proselyting missionary his whole mission. Mwa ha ha! (not that I would've turned down the opportunity to serve if President wanted me to, but hey...)

Letter 1-14-10

Dear Family,

So this past week was transfer week and I can officially say what I have thought and hoped would happen has happened. No Surprises. I am staying in Roswell for the next six weeks, which means I will be staying in Roswell until I go home. At the end of this transfer it will be a total of seven months in Roswell, my second longest area total and longest consecutive area. I have also continued a tradition. Roswell is the burial place of my forefathers. My trainer died in Roswell and my trainer’s trainer died in Roswell. My companion, Elder Thode is staying, too, but we got a third missionary with us, Elder Paul Wakefield of River Heights, Utah (a suburb of Logan). I was in a trio once before and I enjoy it. Elder Wakefield has been out six months and this is already his fourth area. I will finish my mission with a grand total of thirteen companions and six areas (five different, being that I was in Eastland twice). No, I never got the opportunity to serve in the Lubbock or Amarillo areas, but that is alright, I’ve enjoyed the places I’ve been.

So, I believe I left people hanging at the end of last letter, so I will fix that. I mentioned six different people that have the potential to get baptized here in Roswell before I go home. If we got all six, that would be way cool. If I got five, I would hit seventeen on my mission which would average out to one per transfer and that would be a fun statistic. The ward’s goal for the year is twenty-four, which is two per month, so with that we would need to get four. It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

Joe Sanchez is our most progressing. He is sixty year old Hispanic guy who is a Vietnam veteran. He had a son get killed in Iraq a few years back, which is tough. He has had a couple of different baptismal dates, but struggled with coffee, which kept pushing it back. He also took a two week trip to California, which turned out to be real stressful, causing him to have a relapse on the Word of Wisdom. Everything is under control now and he has been clear from the Word of Wisdom for a week now and is pretty much good to go for January 24th.

Peter Hardin is one of the nine year olds I’ve mentioned. The other one doesn’t seem to be ready at this time, but Peter is. His parents are both members who have testimonies, but have struggled with church attendance. We haven’t been able to get them to church, but once we do, things will speed up. A wrench got thrown into this story last week when Peter’s dad had a stroke and seizure at the same time which was pretty serious. We went to the hospital to give him a blessing and he is now home, so hopefully everything will be alright.

Jake Gonzales is the non-member husband in an active family. They have 3 daughters who are 17, 20, and 22. Jake has been taught a few times in the past and was close to baptism but wasn’t fully committed. We have recently started to re-teach him and it seems as if he is trying to get his life in order with religion and his a newer resolve to put it as a top priority by coming to church, reading the Book of Mormon, and praying. We chatted about the Restoration and he believes that it’s true, so I don’t see why he’s not baptized. His second oldest daughter is in the Military and will be visiting for a few weeks in February, so we will see if he’ll accept to get baptized then, because I think that would be perfect timing.

Sara Fink is a seventeen year old high school senior and cheerleader. Her boyfriend is the second ward bishop’s son and he invited her to church a few months back. The day before services, we randomly knocked into her and taught her a first lesson. I don’t think that that was a coincidence. We have been teaching her for a few months now and even though she says that she’s never really been a religious person, this has really caught her attention. She accepted a soft baptismal commitment last week, so hopefully we can set a solid date here soon.

Last, but not least, Chuck and Sharon Nelson are a non-member couple in their fifties. They were a member referral. Chuck is a very educated man, but is also a genius when it comes to religion. He is what some people would call a dry Mormon. Everything he believes is what our church believes, he just hasn’t realized it yet. He loves our visits and loves the Book of Mormon, too. Sharon is scared of people, so kind of avoided us for a while, but randomly opened up and started asking us questions. She had questions about the Plan of Salvation, specifically where do we go when we die, because she had family pass away a year or so ago. The funny thing is that when we started going over the plan of salvation briefly, Chuck was pretty much teaching with us, so that was cool. Their obstacle is that they are very, very busy, so we have a hard time sitting down with them, but once we do, they will progress rather quickly I believe.

So there we go. That is the lowdown here in Roswell. The baptisms we get this transfer will most likely come from that pool, so be praying with me that we can find success. Life is good. I’ll write again next week since I have run out of time. Peace!

Letter 1-7-10

Dear Family,

Seven days of 2010 has come and gone. It has been a good week. I think though that having my calendar opened to January of 2010 has been the biggest insult of my mission. Stupid calendar. I think the calendar has tried to make up for it, though, because it is a flower calendar that I collected when I bought some Pero at a health foods store for Joe Sanchez as a substitute for his coffee. They offered the calendar to me for no charge, so I took it. I think the quote on it in January’s calendar teaches false doctrine. It says that flowers are the sweetest things that God created and forgot to put a soul into. I think flowers do have souls, but maybe I’m wrong. It does say in the Book of Moses that everything that God created was created spiritually before it was created physically. Not like it’s that important anyway. I don’t think Henry Beecher (the author of the quote) had the Book of Moses right off hand, so you can’t really blame him. Anyways, the idea that I am in the last full month of my mission has bothered me and caused the new year to start off a little weird in my mind, but at the same time I am way excited for this new year because the missionary work in 2010 is just going to catch fire in this mission. That is evidenced in what the mission goals are for 2010 throughout the mission. President Robison set a goal for us to triple baptize this year. 60 in one month. That will be remarkable. Elder M Russell Ballard told President Robison that you can get 40 and maybe even 50 without the help of the members, but you won’t hit 60 or beyond without the help of the members, so that is our focus. The members are the means. That is not just what our mission president has said, that is the direction the prophet and the quorum of the twelve want us to take and it has been evidenced in conference. I think there has been at least one general authority in the last several conferences that have talked about member missionary work and several recent talks devoted solely to member missionary work. Take Elder Perry’s talk in May 2009 as an example. Elder Perry is the current head of the missionary organization, so what he said then is huge. Back on terms of goals, our stake president here in Roswell set a goal for 210 convert baptisms in 2010 for the Roswell Stake and the Roswell 1st Ward set a goal for 24 convert baptisms. Take into perspective that the numbers for 2009 for the stake 114 convert baptism and 11 for the ward. Everyone has very high expectation for this year and everyone’s attitudes are in the right place. It is way exciting. I am planning on contributing all I can in the very short amount of time I will be here. If I am allowed to stay in Roswell this next transfer I see an honest potential for 5 or 6 people to get baptized here in this ward in the next two months. Statistically, having everyone get baptized that you think will get baptized doesn’t always happen, but we at least need to get a minimum of 4, because to hit the goal for this ward of 24 in the year, we need 2 a month. I don’t have time to give details about people, I’ll do that next week, but if you want to pray for some people, here are some names of specific people that have the potential to get baptized: Joe Sanchez, Peter Hardin, Jake Gonzales, Chuck and Sharon Nelson, and Sara Fink. I do have to get going, but I will give some details later, probably next week, about these people. Till then, peace out!

Dear Family,

Wow, 2009 is over. That is just unreal to me. 2010 brings in, not just a whole new year, but a whole new life for me and I am very nervous, but yet I felt the same way about 2008 when I was ready to embark on my mission and that all worked out, so I guess there is nothing to worry about. I’ve just been reflecting on all the happenings of 2009 and I am amazed. It has been a wonderful year with many great miracles. I am sad that this year is over. 2010 brings new adventures. New obstacles. New challenges. Many great things lie ahead and it is time to make the absolute most of these first two months of the year. Savor every last moment.

Elder Thode gave me a fortune cookie yesterday. Normally they don’t bother me at all. They are really fun to read. However, this one scared me to death. It said, “Romance will come your way soon.” Horrible. How dare it tell me that! It’s an awful good thing that fortune cookies don’t control your destiny or I’d be in a lot of trouble.

A few questions real quick. First, I got to wonder about the history of Joseph Smith III. What is his story and background? Second, the scriptures say to love everyone and Christ was especially adamant in the New Testament about loving your enemy. Is hating Satan going against that? He is a spirit child of our father in heaven and at one point was the son of the morning. I wouldn’t think that that is a bad thing, to hate Satan, but it poses an interesting point.

Anyways, that’s all for now. Everyone have a great New Year’s Eve celebration and a Happy New Year! Great wishes to all in 2010!

Dear Family,

So on Monday I received a very disturbing call. It was Sister Hansen, the secretary to President Robison, calling to know what airport I wanted to fly into. She had the information that I was from Bountiful, so she assumed the Salt Lake airport but wanted to double check. I told her to send me to the Los Angeles airport and she laughed. I think that would be quite funny if I could’ve gotten away with that. I didn’t even think till later about the Atlanta airport. I should’ve had her send me there…

Anyways, onto more important subjects, since that is a long time away, how about talking about a different phone call, the one in nine days from now. I’ve heard rumor that people back home have extended family that they are trying to schedule with and want to know when I will be calling. Well, honestly I do not know. President has this weird thing about not wanting to tell us until right before when it comes to holiday information. It’s quite inconvenient, but what can you do. I tried to get information out of the Zone Leaders yesterday so I could write today, but the ZL I talked to decided to be a smart Alec and play guessing games with me before he just told me that President was going to email us today about it and refused to say anything else. That got me a little annoyed, but I decided to wait till emails today and guess what? No email from President. How nice. So now I am sitting here with no information. Don’t worry, though, interviews with President are tomorrow (which is why P-day is today) and I will ask him. Once I know, I will be smart and do something perfectly legal, have someone here call home for me and let you know. Mom has received a couple of phone calls recently from Roswellites so it might be one of them. Reflecting back on last year, I think Elder Romney and I called in the evening, so that would be my guess and it would be me calling home, not the other way around. I think it’s free for our sprint phones to call after 7, but I could be lying. Anyways, I’ll get back to you somehow on that.

So I will hold true to the promise I gave last week, we have three baptismal candidates that should get baptized here in the next month or so if everything goes right. The most solid is a Hispanic guy in his 60’s named Joe Sanchez. He was a referral from a member. The member talked to him about the church and invited him to take the lessons and he accepted. Well, we dropped in and the rest is history. He was very accepting. He’s been looking for a church his whole life, but never was settled on any one church until now. He feels really good about this church. He’s received some opposition from his family, but we’ve helped him through it. He would actually be getting baptized this upcoming Sunday, but has struggled a little with the word of wisdom. He actually quit smoking and drinking 6 months ago, but has a hold up with coffee. When we taught the word of wisdom a week or so ago he was drink five to six cups a day, but is now down to one, so we’re confident that he’ll break the habit soon. He’s also going out of town for the holidays and won’t be back till the beginning of January, so we set his date for January 10th.

The other 2 candidates are both 9 years old. We asked for the over-eight-unbaptized list from the ward clerk and found both Gracie Gillies and Peter Hardin on it. Gracie is the daughter of a part-member family. The husband, Doug, is a less active and the wife, Judy, is non-member. We’ve been visiting with them for some time, he’s the one that told me he’d come to church if BYU beat TCU, and the wife is somewhat standoffish, but I think that she’d come if he’d get active. Surprisingly enough, they are surrounded by members that have kids Gracie’s age that have gotten her to come to church and commit to baptism. We set a tentative date for January 3rd, but we want to make sure Gracie getting baptized is her honest decision and not something she’s doing because her friends want her to. As a side note, I gave Gracie the Book of Mormon that the Bountiful 9th Ward Primary sent to me to give away. In the letter the Primary sent to me with the Book of Mormon, they said that they put a penny in a jar for every person that brings their scriptures every week and when they save enough money to buy a Book of Mormon, they do so and decide who to send it to. I thought that was very sweet and so I thought it was fitting to give it to a Primary-aged investigator. Gracie really like it (it had a picture and a note from the primary in the front page) and has begun to read it. Someone pass that on to the Primary President up in Bountiful. I think the primary would like to hear this story.

Last but not least, Peter Hardin is the 9 year old son of a less active couple and the story is real funny. Once we saw his name on the list, we dropped by and visited with his mom, Sister Kelley Hardin. A week later, she lost her job. We stopped by again the day after she lost her job, having no idea that she had. She told us that and saw that as a sign that she needs to come back and get Peter baptized because all that was holding her back was that she worked on Sunday. We talked with Peter and he is a really nice young boy that is anxious to get baptized. We set a date for the 27th of this month and were going to start teaching this past week, but the family got sick. That may push the date back a little, but that is alright. We’ll just pray for them to get better soon, because Peter has to come to church twice before baptism.

That’s all for this week, have a great day and I’ll write again next week and call a few days after. Peace!

Dear Family,

The month of December rolls on and the Christmas season is well underway. And to get this out of the way, what do you give a missionary for Christmas who only has 2 months left when Christmas hits? Probably something that he could use for a month or two on the mission, yet also use after he gets home. As far as what that is, I have no idea. Elder Droge’s Christmas wish list is empty at the moment, so be creative. And FYI, a common gift is missionary music, but President Robison came out with a new rule that totally axed most of my music that I have collected. We can only listen to vocal or instrumental renditions of the hymns. Yay! … … ! But yeah, be creative and surprise me. That’s all I’m saying. And just remember that there isn’t a need to worry about me too much or ponder over the matter a whole lot because receiving Christmas gifts isn’t at top of my mind this season, so all is well.

Last week I mentioned that I saw snow for the first time on my mission, but it melted away. Well, just hours later a second storm hit and this one was real bad. It snowed and stayed all the way till Monday. I laughed at how the people here all panicked since it was the biggest snow storm in Roswell in six to eight years, yet it was only 2 or 3 inches. It did make for a dangerous ride to our combined Christmas Zone Conference in Lubbock. We were perfectly fine and no one in the mission was injured at all, but there were a few close calls due to the icy roads. One truck tipped on its side and another car with my MTC companion Elder Craven in it slid into oncoming traffic and almost hit a pole but remained untouched. The Lord watched after his TLMites. The conference was good. It had a duel purpose. We had our Christmas celebration on part of it and the other part was great instruction where President Robison gave us our goal for 2010. We are going to triple baptize this next year. We started at 20. We doubled that and hit 40. Now the goal is to be able to hit 60 baptisms. I’m excited for the direction this mission is going, but yet I am sad that I won’t really be a part of this goal, unless we hit it in the very first month. I feel like I am walking away from the mission and abandoning it. I wish I could do more than I have, but like Alma says, I should be content with what I have been allotted. I have nothing to complain about. I saw able to witness first hand the transition that this mission went through in completely changing the mindset and attitude towards the work. I have learned a lot and have become a completely different person. Now it is time to work my absolute hardest and sprint towards the finish line and then jump blindly into this strange new world that I will be forced to enter. Life after the mission. Or better yet, life after death.

Things are looking to turn out well here in Roswell these last few months. We do have a few baptismal candidates for the end of December and the beginning of January. I have this weird goal to hit 17 baptisms on my mission, which is an average of one per transfer. I’m at twelve right now and have to get 5 more in the next 2 ½ months. We have 3 fairly solid dates and a few others that could follow suit, so the goal is looking realistic, but since I have already spent too much time on other things I will leave you hanging. Mwa ha ha! Tune in next week!
